Amazing pics! I think your plane also had a better performance And better ice protection too….

The flight home was very challenging and I was working pretty well flat out. Technically it was OK because the sferics picture was clean all along the route so IMC flight was pretty safe and in fact there was very little turbulence until the UK end when I was down below FL080 and got handed to, wait for it, London Info 124.60 who asked me where I was…

Plan B was a dip down to ~1000ft and flying all the way along the coast of Germany etc all the way home. That’s why I got all the airport data above. But in the end it was not necessary. I had to climb initially to FL190, but (at -15C!) picked up a fair coat of very clean rime ice. Normally this would not do much but at the operating ceiling anything will bugger up performance. I will post some pics of it. So, with the stall warner going, I had to go down to FL180 and then the clouds opened up anyway, for a couple of hours which is what is needed to get rid of ice by sublimation.

The UK end was some of the heaviest rain I have ever seen. It got the dead files off very nicely! And not a drop leaked inside. I thought… what a brilliant plane the TB20 is. It just sits there, in this sh*t, the MP never budged (well maybe 1/4" during the absolutely heaviest rain which must have been out of the bottom of a TCU – needless to say I was watching the MP very carefully).

Ref the fuel servo icing data, alternate air at FL180 drops the IAS about 5kt.

The Thuraya XT satellite phone didn’t work – until I found the little corner of win8 (in Task Manager somewhere) where you can see which process is accessing the internet and in this case moving loads of megabytes. It was bloody “google cache”!!!!! I have no idea what this piece of crap is and even less what it is doing on a windows tablet which does not have the POS Spyware called “Chrome” installed. I blocked some port number (50k-something) and, with about USD 25 wasted, suddenly everything worked. Even the Telegram messaging app works, over the 50kbit/sec GPRS connection ($5/MB). I know one could firewall it the other way (block everything except a couple of private wx sites – much discussed here in the past) but that prevents a browser to be used generally unless one does extra work (involving a private web proxy server). So I had an internet connection for much of the flight, so was able to continually check for TS activity (sferics), get metars, etc.

Good to hear that you got home alright. It was nice to meet up on Saturday.

ESTL

As @Anders said, great that you made it all the way home.

And thanks everyone who turned up Saturday, it was great seeing you all.

Thanks for your company Sunday night, @Peter. I decided to leave Malmø to Norway before the succession of fronts start rolling in. There was quite a bit of convective activity during my flight to ENCN, but scattered enough not to be a problem.

Sorry I could not make it on Saturday.

It was great to meet you all and thank you for making it such a nice occassion

The wx picture for the rest of the week (commencing with tomorrow) does indeed look spectacularly crappy, and the weekend isn’t going to be any better than a reasonably clean wx with a PROB30 TEMPO +TSRA

Yes. I may make it to ENTO tomorrow depending on how much convectivity there turns out to be. This afternoon was intense up there. And it all originates in the UK :-)

I definitely need to be in Oslo (ENKJ or worst case ENGM) by Friday. Oslo is right in the center of that low…

At least for the moment there are no additional fronts beyond Friday. Hope is the motor of life.

There are many nice places in Sweden but this is not in Sweden

First picture is West coast of Lolland just north of Søndernor
Second picture is Lille Ø and Askø
Third picture is Dronning Alexandrines Bro

All three are in Denmark

How embarrassing

I must take a photo of my tablet next to each picture I take e.g.

Peter,

Why did you prefer sferics over your stormscope to avoid electrical activity ?

Besides, could you show us a radar picture at the moment of your flight, so that we can get a representation of the stuff you went through ?
(Can we say you now fly frontal weather systems !?)

About your icing-and-near-stall experience around your ceiling altitude (which does not seem a pleasant one), I have two more questions:
- not being able to stay clear on top all the time, why didn’t you choose to cruise, even in the muck, below freezing level ? (Of course Monitoring radar and sferics via your sat connection)
- as suggests Achim here and there, why don’t you go to a turbo installation ?!?

Thanks for sharing with us,

Alexandre.
